George RR Martin finally offered some update on the highly-anticipated "Game of Thrones" book series. The prolific author teased fans that "A Song of Fire and Ice" may not have the usual happy ending. From a man who basically killed off fan-favorite characters, it shouldn't come as any surprise if the ending will turn out bleak.
Cold & Darkness Hover Westeros
George RR Martin offered tantalizing details about his upcoming book "The Winds of Winter" and fans may not like them one bit. An interview with Entertainment Weekly revealed that Martin described the book as the time when darkness will cloud over Westeros. As such, the book will also be the start of winter; a metaphor often associated with death.
While the last season of "Game of Thrones" showed a satisfying ending to Jon Snow battle, the start of Daenerys' journey across the Narrow Sea and Arya's return to Westeros, the book may not narrate the same triumphant story. The sixth novel of "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series - which the upcoming season of GOT is based on - will have notes of death and darkness.

Winter Is Coming
"There are a lot of dark chapters right now in the book that I'm writing," Martin said during a Q&A at the Guadalajara International Book Fair. "It is called 'The Winds of Winter,' and I've been telling you for 20 years that winter was coming. Winter is the time when things die, and cold and ice and darkness fill the world, so this is not going to be the happy feel-good that people may be hoping for."
Martin further explained that it's just the natural course of things; before it gets better, things will get worse. Aside from discussing details on "The Winds of Winter," he also broached the eventual conclusion of the book series, which is slated on the seventh book "A Dream of Spring." While he didn't reveal anything big about the ending, he said that the book will have a bittersweet note overall.
"The Winds of Winter" has no release date as of publication. The book is expected to hit the shelves anytime next year.
