Netflix has announced that it has given the green light to a "Luke Cage" season 2. The superhero series is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is based on the Marvel Comics hero of the same name.
IGN says that the streaming service first announced the "Luke Cage" season 2 renewal during Comic-Con Brazil over the weekend. The news was later circulated via the Netflix show's Facebook and Twitter accounts. To announce the upcoming second season, the "Luke Cage" Twitter and Facebook pages shared a short video featuring the neon sign in front of Pop's Barber Shop. A smaller sign at the bottom of the window spelled out "Season 2 coming soon." The social media posts were accompanied by the words "Always forward," Pop's motto in the show's freshman season.
The announcement of a "Luke Cage" season 2 follows the show's successful first season, which debuted on the streaming service this fall. "Luke Cage" season 1 drew millions of viewers and was critically praised for its take on the comic book character. Among Netflix's 2016 programs, it was surpassed in viewership only by "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life."
"Luke Cage" season 2 marks the third time that a Marvel television series has been given a second season on Netflix. Prior to "Luke Cage" airing its first season, "Daredevil" had aired its season 2 and gotten the green light for a season 3. "Jessica Jones" had also been renewed for a second run following its critically acclaimed freshman season.
But before "Luke Cage" season 2 drops on the streaming platform, Netflix's Marvel universe will first see the debut of "Iron Fist," as well as the highly anticipated crossover "The Defenders." For this special limited event, all four superheroes -- Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) -- will join forces against the bad guys.
Because both "Iron Fist" season 1 and "The Defenders" are expected in 2017, fans probably won't be seeing "Luke Cage" season 2 until at least 2018. The release date may even be further away, as "Daredevil" season 3, "Jessica Jones" season 2, and the first season of "The Punisher" (starring Jon Bernthal) are all reportedly currently in development and may be slated for 2018 release dates.
"Luke Cage" season 2 is currently without an official release date. The show's first season is streaming now on Netflix.
