New information revealed for Watch Dogs – Points at mandatory install, huge map

Ubisoft may have already taken a dig at Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5, but it seems like the developer is taking the same route as Rockstar for its own upcoming open-world hackathon, Watch Dogs.

According to reports, Ubisoft has revealed that the current generation versions of Watch Dogs – read: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – will require the player to perform mandatory installation, similar to Grand Theft Auto 5 on Xbox 360.

In a recent interview with Videogamer at the Eurogamer Expo, Creative Director Jonathan Morin confirmed that the game will ship on two discs, one for installation, and the other for play.

“Yes, there are two discs," Morin stated. "It's the same thing as GTA [5]."

It's also assumed that the Wii U version of the game will arrive with similar requirements. The PlayStation 3 version of Watch Dogs, on the other hand, is expected to ship on a single Blu-ray Disc, but it's yet to be stated to how much space is required for the installation.

Additionally, Morin was also present in an interview with Eurogamer at the same event where he compared the game's fictional version of Chicago to Rockstar's massive open-world Grand Theft Auto 5. While he wouldn’t provide an exact size of Chicago’s map to prove his point, Morin promised that the game’s environment will offer a “huge density.”

“One thing I wanted to promote with Watch Dogs was density, a lot more than scale," Morin told Eurogamer during the interview. "We have a big city but one thing a lot of games aren't exploring is the shared density of it.”

"[In Watch Dogs] you can stand still and profile people for ten minutes - you're playing without moving, almost. I think that's even more important to me than just adding size to it. I don't want size just becoming a space between A and B. We have a huge world but it's more about the density."

Heading into even deeper comparisons with Grand Theft Auto 5, Morin stated that the huge world of the new GTA is justified because of its inclusion of aeroplanes, something Watch Dogs will not be offering.

“GTA5 has a huge world but it has flying, it has jets so it serves that purpose. You don't have a jet unless you have the space to fly into. Us, we have huge density, so if we double or triple the scale then you're going to start hitting repetition because we wanted to aim for the density first. We wanted the game to be the right size for that density, so it's a matter of balancing what you want to achieve," he added.

Watch Dogs is currently scheduled for a Nov. 19 release in North America for both current and next generation consoles, and will be a launch title for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
