Netflix has found its crowning glory on its new original series “The Crown” which continues to receive rave reviews from the streaming giant’s subscribers and critics alike. It took $100 million to produce the royal drama that features the life of Queen Elizabeth II as a young queen.
The Independent hails “The Crown” as the savior from television tedium and makes special mention of Claire Foy’s subdued portrayal of the high profile monarch. Playing Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband and consort, is Matt Smith of the British series, “Dr. Who”. All in all, the show is being lauded to be a historically accurate portrayal of the Queen’s earlier life at the throne.
The 10-episode “The Crown” reveals the Queen’s responsibilities resting upon her head and the sacrifices she has to make. As a very young Queen, she had to recover from the loss of her father while at the same time attend to a failing marriage. Betrayals and scandals involving the other members of the royal family are also tackled in the series that was created and directed by Peter Morgan. He also wrote the 20016 film, “The Queen”.
It has been confirmed that “The Crown” has been renewed for a second season with a November 2017 release date. Foy and Smith reportedly have begun rehearsals for the next season. Already set to run for five seasons, it will not be surprising however if the Netflix original series is extended beyond that considering its strong following around the world.
Meanwhile, the question that many of “The Crown” are probably asking is if Queen Elizabeth II, who just recently celebrated her 69th wedding anniversary, has watched any of the show’s episodes. People Magazine reports that Robert Lacey, a consultant for the series, thinks that the Queen would not have watched it. He added that she is not a fame-chasing celebrity who would want to see herself on television.
