During the PlayStation Experience panel session, Naughty Dog has revealed that the latest sequel to "The Last of Us" will feature Ellie instead of Joel. In the video trailer of "The Last of Us: Part II," Ellie is shown promising to find and kill everybody although her target is not clear in the trailer.
Eurogamer reports that Troy Baker plays the role of Joel, who is the main character in the first game and Ashley Johnson plays the role of Ellie. Creative director Neil Druckmann declined to provide more details on "The Last of Us: Part II" although he generally gave an idea of what to expect on the game.
Druckmann said that the story of "The Last of Us: Part II" is set five years after the first game and Ellie is now 18 years old. "In the first game, the theme was the love between these two characters... This story's the counter of that," he said. "It's about hate," he teased.
According to GameSpot, Druckmann also confirmed that the composer of the first game, Gustavo Santaolalla is coming back for "The Last of Us: Part II." He also noted that Ellie is playing differently from Joel but refused to provide further details of the gameplay.
Naughty Dog decided to show "The Last of Us: Part II" trailer although is not due out for a while and the video trailer was only meant for next year's E3. The first game, "The Last of Us" received praises and positive reviews. Some fans believed that Joel and Ellie's story doesn't need a sequel.
Druckmann then explained that fans may have apprehensions on returning to these characters for the next sequel "The Last of Us: Part II" and his team feels the same way too but he reiterated that nobody loves the characters more than they do and Naughty Dog won't attempt to do it if the team doesn't have the right idea. "All I ask is that fans of the first one put some faith in us - we're going to do right by you," he added.
