Shadow Warrior reboot – Lo Wang's rebirth is 'more engrossing'

It was nearly 16 years ago when Shadow Warrior first arrived on the scene. Now a reboot to the game has been planned and developed by Flying Wild Hog and published by Devolver Digital.

The game tells the “offbeat” story of Zilla Enterprise’s corporate shogun, Lo Wang. Lo Wang has been ordered by his employer to track down and acquire a legendary blade known as the Nobitsura Kage.

“Forced into a timeless battle, Lo Wang learns of the blade’s connection to ancient gods from another realm, pushing our world to the brink of destruction. Aided by Hoji, a banished spirit from this mysterious world, Lo Wang must use a masterful combination of gun, blade, magic and wit to discover the truth behind the demonic invasion and banish the encroaching forces back into the darkness,” the official page states.

To discuss more about the game and as to how the new reboot for the 1997 classic retro FPS, Flying Wild Hog was recently interviewed by Gamingbolt, where the developers discussed the carryover of the old classic to a more modern setting with new gameplay features, and more.

On asked as to why the developers chose to remake Shadow Warrior, out of many other potential titles easily fitting the bill, the company stated that it was approached with the idea by Developer Digital, “as they had access to the IP and many of our studio leads were fans of the original so we saw this as a great opportunity to re-imagine the Shadow Warrior world and bring Lo Wang back to modern gamers.”

It was also revealed that the in-game story plays a major role in the new reboot. The developers stated that, comparatively, the story in the new game is “a lot more engrossing” than the old game, and it’s something the team is very proud of. “There is a great mythology and motivations in the narrative. But of course you can skip it all and get back to the action – sometimes you just want to hack demons apart and that is fine too,” the developer stated.

The in-game campaign mode is said to last at least five to eight hours, although this will depend “on the difficulty level and how thorough gamers are in finding all the secrets.”

The older game saw players wield some cool weapons like the Katana, rail gun, grenade launcher, and sticky mines. Thankfully enough, the developer stated that apart from the cool Katana being present, that game will also see old favorites such as machine guns, quad barrel shotguns, and “even demon heads that unleash energy beams” making a return. Also, the new crossbow is fun to use as well.

While nothing can be said about possible expansion packs for the new reboot, the developer confirmed that although the company is unable to share those details at the moment, “but we would love to continue expanding on Lo Wang’s legacy!”

The reboot for Shadow Warrior is planned for a September release on PC.
