Sony’s official PlayStation app revealed – Everything you need to know

Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4 is easily one of the biggest achievements of the next generation, set to take gaming to a whole new level. Now, however, we momentarily deviate from the topic to talk about the new dedicated app for PlayStation.

SCE WorldWide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida recently revealed the PlayStation App at the Tokyo Game Show, and how it will work on Android and iOS to be in tune with the new PlayStation 4.

The app is said to allow users to use their mobile device as a second screen for the console while also offering the option to access the PlayStation Store at the same time. You can also remotely control your console using your smartphone or tablet.

The new app, simply known as the "PlayStation App," will allow users to connect with friends and get updates on their latest activities, including new games that the user’s friends have bought or have marked as their favorite. Also, as expected, the app will be integrated with a host of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Nico Nico, while offering access to game play broadcasts on Ustream.

However, the real advantage of the app is the ability to turn an Android or iOS-based smartphone or tablet into an additional gaming controller. For example, as the Android Community states,” it could act as a device to draw or grab objects from to throw at a dozen or so white robots for them to play with or dodge.” Interestingly, all these features were showcased in an on-stage augmented reality demonstration (see below).

Slashgear was present at the event stating that the demonstration was made with an Xperia Z1 handset, “with Yoshida swiping and knocking over a gaggle of little white robots. He then progressed to drawing a little creature on the screen and tossing it to the robots, followed by a balloon and more, for them to play with.”

Sony’s PlayStation 4 is currently scheduled to release on Nov. 29, 2013 in Europe, Australia and New Zealand and Nov. 15 in North America. Check out the video below
