The New York Knicks have been playing much improved basketball of late, winning seven out of their last 10 games to go above .500 (10-9) for the season. While the emergence of super sophomore Kristaps Porzingis has been a huge part of the Knicks’ resurgence, the play of Derrick Rose has been solid as well for New York. And though questions continue to persist about the future of the struggling franchise and the former MVP’s role with the team moving forward, Derrick Rose recently said that he doesn’t mind spending the rest of his career with the Knicks.
As noted by the New York Post, Derrick Rose will become a free agent on July 1, but is presently eligible for a two-year contract extension with 4.5 percent raises on his current $21.3 million annual pay. The Post adds that on Dec. 22 (the sixth month of his trade to the New York Knicks), the contract extension he would be eligible for increases to 7.5 percent raises—or a deal amounting to $75 million.
“My thought on that, if they want to do it, that would be cool. It would let me know I’m playing the way they want me to play and I’m on the right track. But if not, I haven’t heard anything. So I’m not thinking about it,” Derrick Rose told the New York Post.
Derrick Rose has looked healthy this season, and has played in all but one of the New York Knicks’ games. He is averaging 16.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game.
“We’re building a culture. We’re building the foundation now. I’m under a one-year contract, to of course I want to paly the rest of my life here,” Derrick Rose was quoted in Slam Magazine. “But it takes time, it takes patience to figure out how everyone is going to fit, if it is going to fit and going from there.”
