Friends, the hugely popular series that ran from 1994-2004 is still getting rumors for a potential reunion movie. But in an interview Lorraine Kelly, Jennifer Aniston who played Rachel in friends revealed why Friends wouldn't work in today's culture.
When asked how Friends would work now, Jennifer Aniston that the Friends was about a time when people spent time with each other and had conversations, she said that people nowadays spend most of their time on their phones on social media rather than hanging out in a coffee shop. "There was something about a time when our faces weren't shoved into cell phones and we weren't checking Facebook and Instagram," she said. "We were in a room together, or in a coffee shop together and we've lost that." said Jennifer Aniston.
Jennifer Aniston certainly does have a point in her statement of the difference in lifestyle from then. With the advancement of technology in communication, it's ironic that people tend to focus on communicating through their phones in social media rather than meeting and socializing with the person themselves.
But if there's a show that could take a comedic spin in today's social media centric culture, Friends could certainly be up to the task. The series have had episodes with the weirdest situations and still manage to make it funny. Friends have done it for 10 years and still, people can't get enough of them. The issues in today's communication could be the "situation" that Friends can tackle and add their unique sense of humor.
The series ended with most of the characters leaving New York and going their separate ways. The Friends reunion movie could start with the characters themselves having their own get-together after 20 years of not physically seeing each other. But after a few introductions, the characters could just stick with checking their phones until someone calls them out to start talking. But the problem is they all forgot how to talk to each other like how they used to.
Then again, a Friends reunion movie would be a sure fire hit even with a bad script as long as the whole cast is back. The Sex and the City movies movies proved that already. But a Friends reunion wouldn't be complete with their brand of humor even if the whole cast is present.
