‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7 Latest Spoilers, News & Update: Negan’s Backstory To Be Explored; Villain Will Be Back In Season 8

Viewers are about to learn more about Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the psychotic but strangely charismatic new villain responsible for the brutal deaths of Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), in the next episode of "The Walking Dead" season 7. On Sunday's "Sing Me A Song," the zombie apocalypse drama will give fans a better look at the Sanctuary, the base of the Saviors, and a deeper understanding of how the group, which Negan leads, operates.

In addition, "The Walking Dead" showrunner Scott Gimple said that the episode will feature a glimpse at Negan's backstory. The main villain of "The Walking Dead" Season 7 made his stunning debut back in the season 6 finale and left an indelible mark in this season's premiere, when he ended the lives of Glenn and Abraham in a controversially violent manner. However, since these episodes, Negan has yet to once again be the main focus of the series. According to Gimple, this will change in the upcoming episode.

"I do believe yes, it's in the future," the "Walking Dead" boss told Yahoo about shedding light on Negan's history. "You know, I'm always careful about this, [because] things can absolutely change. There's a loose plan in place I have."

Gimple also revealed that he takes the "Here's Negan" monthly spread by "Walking Dead" author Robert Kirkman as the backstory of the villainous character. He confirmed that he will be taking elements from the Kirkman-penned story for Negan's arc in "The Walking Dead" season 7.

" ... Negan is not the Joker, he's not an agent of chaos," Gimple said about the villain. "Negan is a lot like strong men that we've seen throughout history." The showrunner also spoke about the dynamic between Negan and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) in "The Walking Dead" season 7, saying, " ... [T]here's a weird level of hurt there that Rick doesn't like him back, and an understanding of why."

Meanwhile, Morgan recently confirmed that his character will be back for the next season of "The Walking Dead." "I know I will be on board for season eight," the actor said in a recent interview on The Howard Stern Show. "We've finished [season 7] a week ago. The next two, I'm really big in. I'm f-- heavy in those."

"The Walking Dead" season 7 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
