The WWE Royal Rumble 2017 promises to be a big event this January 2017 but the annual battle royal could be missing one key element – John Cena. The 39-year-old WWE star has reportedly landed a new Hollywood role which could eat up his schedule and prevent him from participating over at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
As mentioned on iSports Times, John Cena and Chris Jericho have surprisingly become favorites to win the 2017 Royal Rumble. As far as Cena is concerned, victory would allow him to face AJ Styles once more and go after the 16-world title record currently held by Ric Flair.
The script may need to be changed following a report from Variety that the 15-time WWE champion will be starring in a comedy flick, “The Pact”. The project will be Kay Cannon’s directorial debut which would also include Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz.
The movie will be about three parents who try to save their daughters from losing their virginities on prom night. The project poses a new challenge to John Cena who has starred in previous movies like “Trainwreck”, “Sisters”, “The Marine” and “12 Rounds”.
Slowly but surely, John Cena is following the same path taken by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to Hollywood which could mean lesser time in the ring. If he passes up the Royal Rumble, the next stage where he could pop up will be Wrestlemania 33.
Should that be the case, it will be interesting if the WWE would still run the same storyline that would allow Cena to tie Ric Flair’s record. All that may depend on how much time the Cenation leader would have to spare where meager appearance will likely push the creative team to alter WWE storylines.
Cena has been out for quite some time now due to the second season of American Grit 2. With Hollywood offers coming in left and right, does he still have time to help out the WWE, most especially SmackDown?
