UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor was recently stripped of his featherweight title, cutting short his reign as a historic simultaneous two-weight division champ. Though he has not yet released a statement on the UFC’s decision to have him “relinquish” his featherweight title, it appears as though he has been doing some work behind the scenes as he has reportedly gotten a boxing license in the state of California.
“He got a license today and a federal ID,” California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster told MMAFighting.com. “He’s a California boxer now.
After Conor McGregor’s historic rise in the world of MMA, both him and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have been going back and forth with trash talking about a potential boxing super fight. Conor McGregor is expected to take time off from the UFC following his second round win over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden. He announced after the fight that he and his girlfriend are expecting their first child sometime in the middle of next year. It has been assumed that he won’t be fighting inside the Octagon before that.
“He’s qualified. I’d love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent, certainly a high-level opponent. We’re happy to license him. We’re happy he’s a California fighter.”
In just three short years with the UFC, Conor McGregor has become the sport’s biggest star, headlining the four of the five biggest events in the organization’s history. Every event he is part of is a massive weeklong event, with the ceremonial weigh-ins attracting more audiences than some pay-per-view events. After his historic UFC 205 win that made him the first simultaneous two-weight division champion, Conor McGregor said that he wanted an equity stake in the UFC, saying that if he’s the reason the company sold for $4 billion, he should get the share he deserves.
