Grand Theft Auto 5 going next-gen? Rockstar: 'We'll see what happens'

It seems like Rockstar is leaving the door open for eventually bringing Grand Theft Auto V over to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

While discussing GTA V's recently revealed online mode with CVG, Rockstar North President Leslie Benzies said that the company is waiting to see what will happen with the game on the current console generation before going next-gen, simply stating, "We'll get the current gen version out first and see what happens in the future." Granted, it's not an official confirmation, but it's not a denial either.

Benzies wording is a bit different, but the overall message is similar enough to the one that Rockstar VP Dan Houser has been throwing around since last October concerning a PC version of GTA V: "...we're currently focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game and don't have any details to share about a PC version at this time."

Why such focus on these consoles above the rest? In a November interview with Famitsu, Houser told the magazine that "All the best games for a console come out at the end of the lifecycle, right? So now's the best timing of all." Given that, it'd could be quite a while before GTA V makes its way over to the PS4, and Xbox One, if ever.

Historically, Rockstar hasn't made many GTA titles available on multiple consoles, at least not as a DIRECT port, but when they do, it was often years between releases. Sure, Grand Theft Auto III and San Andreas found their way to PS3 and Xbox 360 via the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, but there was nothing distinct between these versions.

From a sales perspective, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have the game available on more platforms, and the quality of some of the screenshots already had some guessing they were from the next-gen systems as it is. But Rockstar would have to offer something unique to encourage purchases, and the developer would need time to do that, especially if the staff is so focused lately on releasing the game for only two platforms.
