Here’s some not-so-cool news for all the Dragon Age fans out there. According to reports, fan favorite party member Morrigan will not be available this time to join the players’ team in Bioware’s upcoming RPG thriller Dragon Age: Inquisition, the company has revealed.
However, while Morrigan is set to miss out on the new party, it has also been clarified that she will still have a major role to play in the overall story of the game.
"It is fair for people to understand that [Morrigan] will not be a party member. That's going to disappoint some people," Dragon Age boss Mike Laidlaw told GameInformer in a recent interview, "but it's important for us to be upfront about that."
"It's not a cameo," added writer David Gaider. "She plays a significant role."
BioWare, as speculated by Eurogamer, is “being cryptic about whether that role will involve tying up the plotline of the baby she conceived (probably - there were various outcomes) at the end of Dragon Age 1. That baby, she prophesied, would have the soul of an Old God.”
"[Morrigan] has a human role in this plot," Gaider added, "which may surprise some people because they might only think of her as a plot device. She has this big plot she's involved in, and while that's true to an extent, I'm taking her to a human place. That will make sense after the fact."
As far as a build up to a story is concerned, “The kernel of Inquisition’s story we knew from about midway through Dragon Age: Origins. The story has been in the making for a very long time,” Laidlaw stated. “The story of Inquisition is [Morrigan’s] moment, which is a good way to think about it.”
When asked about any new reference coming up from the player’s past interactions with Morrigan, Gaider said: “Yes. The various states that Morrigan can be in – of which there can be quite a few, because we don’t know when to stop when it comes to making decisions – they’re all recognized. Whether or not they have the ultimate effect like the kind of reactivity someone imagines, that depends on the person. But we do recognize them and it does play a role of varying degrees depending on the surroundings.”
Dragon Age: Inquisition is currently scheduled for a 2014 release on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Check out the trailer below.
