Given Sir Nukem's last release that served better as a paperweight than it did a game, it may be hard to believe, but 'ol Duke was once considered one of the best heroes of the FPS genre, and nothing exemplified it better than Duke Nukem 3D and its various expansions, featuring a great combination of crass humor, pop culture references, innuendo, creative weaponry, and great gameplay, all sprinkled with just a pinch of nudity.
But that was the 90's, and Duke's time as king has since been dethroned. But that doesn't mean younger gamers still can't relive the glory days like a Bruce Springsteen song. Devolver Digital is teasing that Duke may be coming to the PS Vita. The studio tweeted a picture, seen above, of Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition running on the Sony handheld, along with the message, "Here's Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition running on a @PlayStation Vita. That is all. cc @AbstractionGame." Abstraction Games handled the PS Vita port of Hotline Miami, one of the handheld's latest success stories. It was actually the hottest seller on the handheld this past June. Not bad for a little indie title, really.
While this twitter tease isn't exactly a formal announcement, the fact that it's a possibility is comforting, especially for the older crowd, yours truly included. It would be enough to make me consider dusting off the Vita at the very least, throwing Duke's mighty boot to finish off a Pig Cop was without a doubt a hallmark moment of FPS games gone by.
If the Vita port is anything like the Megaton Edition currently on Steam, it means that it's the original Duke Nukem 3D, coupled with three expansion packs: Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach, Duke: Nuclear Winter, and Duke It Out in DC, all with achievements / trophies. As you could probably tell by the name, Life's a Beach gave Duke a tropical twist on things, re-skinning some of Duke's weaponry and alien opponents with a beachy theme. T'was a similar case for Nuclear Winter, which obviously opted for snowier theme. If you can't figure out they direction Duke It Out in DC took, then God have mercy on you.
We'll keep you posted if this becomes official.
