Uber has become a very important service for commuters these days as they are available to them 24*7. With its services gaining so much attention, the ridesharing company has introduced another new technique to keep a watch on its riders' location.
Whether a commuter catches the Uber cab and goes directly to the destination or he halt at several points before reaching the final junction can conveniently be figured out. Keeping information private, according to Mobile Industry Review, is something that people have left long back. Today, people share their personal, professional and other details online. Hence, they have somehow compromised their right to privacy anyway.
Latest Uber App With The Facility of Tracking Background User Details
Uber has taken this initiative in summer 2015 and decided to detect the location of its service users until he is finally done with his ride at a time. As soon as a commuter installs the latest app update, he will be subject to this rule of the company.
The app version 3.222.4 gives the ride sharing company the right to track the location of the passengers until they reach their destination and pay for the service. Prior to this, the company only asked the commuters to share their destination details before they got into the sedan.
Uber States Motive Behind Having to Track Background Commuter Details
Uber indicated its motive behind having this facility included in the app. It said that the company has taken such a step to ensure safety to every passenger it deals with. The ride sharing service provider claimed that this way the number of riders having to cross the street and traffic to reach their destination after being dropped by their car could be determined. The tracking of the commuter's location even after the drop-off, according to the company, will help it to be aware if the drivers were dropping them at a right place or a risky one.
The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a case against Uber and called its background location tracking as "unlawful and deceptive trade practice." To this, Tech Crunch states that the company said that it takes the consent from users before tracking the background location and they ask them to update their GPS system if they agree to take up the service.
