Here's something interesting. Treyarch recently popped up a photo of a wrinkled n' crinkled blueprint (seen above) sporting a gun design never before seen in their acclaimed shooter, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. The picture appears over at Treyarch's official Facebook page. No description accompanies the photo, save for a mysterious date - January 5, 1915, which is all you need to make the fans' start chomping at the bit and doing some Batman-like detective work (I'm looking at you, Reddit). Is a new gun planned to hit Black Ops 2?
The gun is apparently a prototype in the style of Mauser, a German-made manufacturer that's been making armaments since the late 1800's. The pistol here gives the user the option of adding a scope, a never before seen feature in the company's design. It looks like one Mr. Maxis has customized the design. Does that name ring a bell? It should...
Gamers with sharp memory will recall the good Dr. Ludvig Maxis a major part of the story in all of the Call of Duty franchise's various zombie modes, dating all the way back to World at War, not to mention the very reason the undead walk the earth in the first place. Real good egg that Ludvig...
On top of playing the role of the Demonic Announcer in Black Ops 2's own zombie mode, Ludvig also found time to design a few zombie annihilating wonder weapons before he bit the dust. Case in point, the original Ray Gun - his design. Likewise for the 31-79 JGb215. Say what you will about the madman causing the dead to rise, but at least he tried to clean up after himself.
While unraveling a conspiracy and inventing new weapons and technology here and there, surely 'ol Ludvig could've scribbled some adjustments on a run of the mill Mauser, right? You could ask Treyarch, but good luck getting an answer. For the time being, the company could be teasing a new weapon for the next bit of DLC, or just having some fun at players' expense. At the risk of getting overexcited, the pieces do seem to fit...
Going by the game's Season Pass, at least one more piece of DLC is on the way, meaning that alongside new maps, a new gun is entirely within the realm of possibility.
The last new gun to hit Black Ops 2 was the Peacekeeper SMG, which was a "hybrid assault rife and SMG" according to the game's lead artist, Murad Ainuddin. The gun was added in via Black Ops 2's first DLC map pack, Revolution, and features "the lightweight design of an SMG, but with better range and accuracy at the cost of close quarters firepower. It's a great weapon for objective modes like Hardpoint, where you need to quickly get into position and cover objectives from a safe distance," said combat designer Anthony Flame.
Well, I suppose you could argue the Ray Gun Mark II as the most recent "new" gun, but to play devil's advocate, that's more of an upgrade than something brand spanking new.
We'll keep you posted if Treyarch confirms a new gun is indeed in store for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
