Real Madrid CF News: Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History In Scoring Charts And Overtakes Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez

Cristiano Ronaldo is the leading marksman of La Liga this season, having reached ten goals in the campaign after Real Madrid's match against Sporting Gijon.

His two goals in the Saturday match have moved him to the top of La Liga's scoring chart, overtaking Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. Messi is second with nine, and Suarez, last season's winner, at eight.

It's been quite a turnaround for Cristiano Ronaldo, who have been criticized at the start of the season when he appeared to be still recovering from a knee injury acquired from the Euro 2016 final. He made a sluggish start after scoring four goals from his first eight games, but as evidenced in Real's recent matches, he's now returned in top form.

Zidane praises the Portugal captain, saying "That's what Cristiano is like, he can score goals at any moment. When he doesn't score goals everyone thinks he is not playing well. Today he scored twice and worked hard, down the wings and in the middle. He is fully recovered."

Cristiano Ronaldo has also scored his 51st goal in 2016 with the match against Sporting, having scored over the 50-goal mark for the sixth straight year both for Real Madrid and for his country (38 for the club and 13 for Portugal). He has also scored over 31 goals in La Liga, scoring past the 30-goal mark for the seventh straight year.

Emilio Butragueno, current Real Madrid director and former striker, also heaped praises on Ronaldo, saying "His second goal was magisterial. It was like a hammer, it was a sensational header. He was decisive yet again, but even forgetting that, it's a privilege to be able to count on a player like him."

The top three scorers in La Liga will face off at next week's match in El Clásico.
