As one of the most successful and massively popular FPS franchises of all time, the Call of Duty franchise doesn’t really need a second introduction. As a result, with a new game coming up in the franchise, we have learned to expect something new every time. And now it seems like the franchise is moving toward a new direction that will reflect on all future Call of Duty titles.
As reported, Call of Duty developers are looking to add a second screen companion support for related apps and gaming for future Call of Duty titles, including Ghosts, and currently the team is looking to overcome all related challenges.
Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin was recently interviewed by the Financial Post, discussing future prospects of the CoD franchise, and its new addition, Call of Duty: Ghosts.
Rubin stated that these planned companion apps will be introduced in the next generation of gaming, and that new titles in the near future will use these apps in "different and interesting ways." However, incorporating second-screen gaming into the Call of Duty franchise is not that easy and is already posing as a major challenge to the studio.
“Taking off my Call of Duty hat for a second, companion apps started to hit during current-gen, but they’re really going to pick up for next-gen. Different games are going to use apps in a lot of different and interesting ways,” Rubin stated. “It’s a little more of a challenge when it comes to our types of games. Looking away from the screen when the action is intense is obviously a challenge from a game design standpoint. So we have to be careful about that. We have some ideas that I think are going to develop further as we go along in this generation. As with anything with a next-gen launch, you’ll start by dipping your toe in the water in a few places, and then move along from there.”
Rubin also added that the whole studio is currently wrapped around the idea of second-screen for the franchise and that the company’s entire “Beachhead group is doing a lot of work there.” However, he also added that the second screen possibility is linked to the multiplayer aspect of the game and there’s not much to talk about it at the moment.
