What started out as an online meme has now become a fictional supernatural character that will be brought to life by HBO. This winter, HBO will go deeper into its origin and the story behind the character on "Beware the Slenderman" documentary series.
"Beware the Slenderman" was created based on Slenderman, or also popularly known as Slender Man which was originally created as an internet meme found on the Something Awful forums. He was depicted as a very tall with very thin limbs, faceless man wearing a black suit and tie, he was developed through one of the threads which asked the users to edit any common photograph to make it appear more paranormal.
According to Self, one user who has a username Victor Surge added a tall, think figure to black and white images of certain groups of children which were supposed to be the images of the witnesses who saw the abductions of children and then naming the figure as The Slender Man. According to the video, the only way to prove the victims' loyalty to him and his existence is to murder someone.
The "Beware the Slenderman" documentary series is based on the real-life story of two Waukesha girls who ar accused of murdering Payton Leutner, their classmate, by stabbing her 19 times at a park back in May 2014. According to the police report, both Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier told the police officers that they attempted to kill Leutner in an attempt to please the Slender Man and to prove that he is real, WBay reports.
All three girls who were involved in the incident were 12 years old at that time. The victim, Payton Leutner, survived the attack. Both girls both pleaded their innocence by reason of mental disease to counter the homicidal case that was filed in the adult court. "Beware the Slenderman's" release date on January 23, 2017, only on HBO.
