It was only a few days ago that Sony's PlayStation 4 seemed poised to be the system to emerge victorious in the next-gen console battle, but Microsoft's change of heart towards their policies for selling used games and constant online connection have sent pre-orders for the Xbox One skyrocketing.
The console has actually managed to over take the PlayStation 4 over at Amazon. The Xbox One now holds the top spot in the Best Selling video games category, sending the PlayStation 4 to the third spot. Similarly, the Xbox One has overtaked Sony's console at Amazon UK as well, where it stands as the second best seller, and the PlayStation 4 again in third.
While it was predictable that Microsoft's change of heart would've no doubt encouraged more pre-orders, it's meteoric rise still comes as a bit of a surprise, especially given the console's hefty difference in price. The Xbox One is retailing for $100 more in the US, and £80 more in the UK.
Games for the console have also jumped, favoring Microsoft's platform over Sony's in terms of next-gen. One week ago, Watch Dogs and Killzone: Shadows Fall for the PS4 were the first next-gen titles to be seen on the top 20 best seller list, at spots #11 and #13 respectively. As of today, the Xbox One exclusives Forza Motorsports 5 and Dead Rising 3 are the best next-gen sellers, at spots #15 and #17. A PS4 title doesn't show up on the list until spot #23, said title being Watch Dogs. Though, PS3 titles are still high in demand over both next-gen consoles, with the PS3 exclusive The Last of Us beating all other titles in terms of pre-orders.
Microsoft claims the policy switch for the Xbox One came as a result of listening to feedback from the audience, and the company's desire to keep them happy. In other words, smart business.
As it stands today, there is no longer a 24 hour connection requirement to play games on the Xbox One, nor are there any limitations on using, sharing, or selling games. Arguably, the way it ought to be.
