Paul W.S. Anderson was interviewed about his "Resident Evil" movies following the success of the latest movie franchise installment "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter." He also talked about his influences for the "Resident Evil" movies and made mention of his plans for a film adaptation of Capcom's "Monster Hunter."
"Monster Hunter" is a best-selling role-playing game from the company Capcom. "Monster Hunter" is hugely popular in China and Japan, which already has an attraction in the Universal Studios theme park.
The game "Monster Hunter" has a tagline "For every Monster, there is a Hero." Its premise is about an ordinary salary man in a dead end job who discovers he is a descendant of an ancient hero. To save our world, the hero must travel to a mystical world and become the "Monster Hunter."
Jeremy Bolt, a "Resident Evil" co-director stated that compared to "Resident Evil," which is a sci-fi, horror, and action film, "Monster Hunter" is a PG-13 action adventure movie. Paul W.S. Anderson likens it to be a bit of a "Star Wars" and "Lord Of The Rings" mix of a fantasy movie set up in a Dune-like world.
My Nintendo News stated that Anderson spoke of how the characters are relatable like Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix." A character who thinks he is caught in a rat race and in a boring job but as it turns out, he is a hero in an alternate world. In this movie's case, it's the "Monster Hunter" world.
Anderson added more on why he is fascinated by the beautiful world of "Monster Hunter." He compares it to a "Star Wars movie," in terms of world creation. Like "Resident Evil," they are able to inject their own characters and story.
Deadline reported that Anderson was also amazed by the "Hunter World" as it is set in a vast desert that makes the Gobi desert seem like a sandbox. Sand sailing galleons travel through the sand waves. The "Monster Hunter" world is filled with what he describes as the most wonderful creatures, gargantuan monsters that burst out from the sand, flying dragons and giant arachnids.
The freshness and excitement of a new world in "Monster Hunter" were attractive to Anderson. It is something he can build a new world around like what they did with the "Star Wars" and "Marvel Universe." He did not mention when the will filming will start.
