"True Detective" season 3 is surrounded with cancellation rumors following the indefinite hiatus of the star-studded HBO series. While fans are looking forward to another batch of new episodes, it seems the network has shifted its focus solely to another priority: "Westworld." Will it get aired on 2017?
'True Detective' Season 3 Gets A Backseat Over 'Westworld'
"True Detective" season 3 seemed to be getting the backseat over the HBO's new series "Westworld." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, HBO programming executive Casey Bloys said that "True Detective" season 3 is still on hold while "Westworld" has been already renewed after airing its first season.
"True Detective" season 3 doesn't even have a script yet, the HBO chief added. The writers were not given the green light to create the story for season 3, he explained. Despite all of these, Casey Bloys remains hopeful that "True Detective" season 3 will still air next year.

"True Detective" season 3 apparently is in conceptualization stage -- not yet written at all. "I don't have anything to report on either of them other than they're thinking about what the best next version is," he finished off.
Why Is HBO Taking Time To Air 'True Detective' Season 3?
GameNGuide previously reported that its original director will not be returning to helm "True Detective" season 3. Executive producer and director Nic Pizzolatto nabbed a project with Marvel, leaving the director's chair empty for "True Detective" season 3 for a little while.
HBO then chose Cary Fukunaga as a replacement for Pizzolatto. Recent reports claim that Fukunaga himself confirmed that renewal for "True Detective" season 3 despite contradicting reports.
Meanwhile, fans are calling for Matthew McConaughey to reprise his role as Rust Chole in order to save the series from getting canceled. With no concrete details for "True Detective" season 3, some reports are saying that it may get aired later than expected: 2018.
