New President-elect Donald Trump has given a shocking proposal to entirely eliminate global climate research at NASA. Funds will be devoted more to exploring deep space. Scientists warn that this shocking proposal may bring everyone back to the dark ages.
NASA Update: Donald Trump Eliminates Climate Research In Favor Of Deep Space
President Trump's shocking proposal to eliminate all climate research is in line with the previous efforts of Grand Old Party (GOP) to destroy Earth sciences program at NASA, Common Dreams reported. Republican members of the Congress also made the same move in 2015 and early in 2016.
Funds for the NASA global climate research will be cut in favor of deep space exploration. With this, Bob Ward of London School of Economics and Political Science has said that President-elect Donald Trump's proposal is a "shockingly stupid" move. He has added that this is a severe blow to global research on environmental change across the world.
Senior Trump campaign adviser Bob Walker has said that there is no need for NASA to do politically correct environmental monitoring. "We see NASA in an exploration role, in deep space research," Walker told the Guardian.
NASA Update: Earth-centric Research For Other Agencies
This shocking proposal may not mean all researches will be eliminated immediately. This is because it would be difficult to stop all on-going climate research at the agency. However, future NASA researches will be geared towards deep space exploration. There will be more Earth-centric science research for NASA. These global climate researches will be placed under other agencies where it is their main mission.
NASA Update: Not All Climate Change Funds Will Be Stopped
According to Salon, global climate research has been heavily politicized. This has affected other deep space researches and other agencies from doing what they should really do. With this, President Trump will cut global climate change-related funds in other federal departments. It includes Energy, Interior and State departments.
Galvin Schmidt, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies head and a climate scientist, believes that President Trump cannot cut all funds for global climate change. Stopping all global climate change funds would mean abandoning NASA satellites and researches that monitor the Earth and help preserve life on Earth. It will bring everybody back to the dark ages and waste billions of dollars of scientific research.
