Henry Cavill's turn as Superman was a hit with film goers, as Warner Brother's Superman reboot Man of Steel debuted at the top of the box office charts with $125.1 million made on its $225 million budget.
This makes Man of Steel the biggest June opening since Toy Story 3's $110.3 million in 2010.
According to reports, Man of Steel earned an impressive $29,731 per theater average and 41 percent of box office receipts came from 3D ticket sales. Critical reception was polarizing as the Zack Snyder directed comic book film holds a 55 percent Metacritic score. Man of Steel also seems to have faired better critically and finically than 2006's Superman Returns and is set to surpass Bryan Singer directed dud's domestic total in about one week.
Considering Man of Steel's success, this means that executives at Warner Brothers could be planning better adaptations of DC series that was once hampered by box offices catastrophes like Catwoman and Green Lantern outside of Christopher Nolan's now genre defining Dark Knight Trilogy.
Most importantly, the blueprint for a possible Justice League film has officially been set for Warner Brothers to square against Disney's adaptation of Marvel's The Avengers franchise. Though Man of Steel's lead Cavill has yet to comment on Justice League, Warner Brother's president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said that "Henry will be around for a while."
Falling behind Man of Steel was Seth Rogen and James Franco led R-Rated comedy This is The End which closed the weekend at $20.5 million following its Wednesday debut. After three weekends Now You See Me is close to passing the $100 million mark as it holds on into the number three spot. Last weekend's number one champion The Purge feel 76 percent to number five behind Fast & Furious 6 at $8.2.
