TV Land is currently developing the remake of the high school drama, "Heathers." Original star Shannen Doherty was rumored to return in the upcoming "Heathers" reboot.
ScreenRant wrote that the original 1988 "Heathers" was a film, directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Daniel Waters. The story focused on Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder), who was the new member of the popular girl group in Westerburg High School.
The three other girls in the group were all named Heather. After being in the group for a while, Veronica began to grow tired of her friends' selfish ways and eventually left them. In turn, the three Heathers started a smear campaign to destroy Veronica's reputation.
Veronica asked for help from the rebellious J.D. (Christian Slater), whose plan for revenge involved killing her oppressors. The protagonist is not completely in agreement with her boyfriend's plan, however.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that TV Land ordered a pilot for a TV series based on the "Heathers" film. The "Heathers" reboot is supposed to initially adapt the film plot, with some updates.
However, the new version of "Heathers" is also planned to be an anthology that shows a different setting and storyline every season. This means that there will be a new set of Heathers, regardless of the setting.
Shannen Doherty, who played the original Heather Duke, will be returning in the new "Heathers" on TV Land. The actress confirmed her involvement on Instagram by providing a sneak peek. TV Land has not yet revealed the identity of Doherty's character, but teased that her role will be pivotal.
The other roles have previously been cast by TV Land. The two other original Heathers, Kim Walker and Lisanne Falk, will not be returning in the new series. Walker died of a brain tumor in 2001, while Falk has not acted since 2002.
"Heathers" is currently in production in Los Angeles, with Jason Micallef writing the script and Leslye Headland directing. Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are serving as executive producers. The launch date has yet to be announced. More updates and details on "Heathers" on TV Land are expected soon.
