It's one thing to go in and alter a ROM for an old-as-dirt system, and churn out a couple of Wilfrod Brimley's to replace the robot masters for Mega Man 3. It's quite another to alter a game for a fairly recent system like the Nintendo Wii.
But that's exactly what a group of modders did when they set out three years ago to make Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii., the "unofficial" sequel to New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
Apart from adding a syllable to the four year old title, the mod also adds in a whopping 128 new levels, 3 new worlds, new bosses, as well as restore an old favorite power up. Truly impressive when you consider that the original game only offered a total of 80 levels.
You may ask yourself, of all the Wii games out there, why mod this one? While, it happens to be one of the console's most successful, selling over 26 million copies worldwine, and earning the best game award of 2009 for the console by IGN, Game Trailers, and the Spike Video Game Awards. It would get a follow up as New Super Mario Bros 2 for the 3DS, and another for Nintendo's newest console, the Wii U, as New Super Mario Bros. Wii U.
Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii is definitely one of the group's more complete mods, but they've also released a series of shorter, but equally creative mods with their own set of new levels, music and more, all available for download on the Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii website.
Perhaps the best thing about this mod? It's completely legal, and playable on any homebrew-enabled Wii console. No need for piracy or any hardware mods here. The only thing you'll need is the Wii console, some free storage space, SD adapter, and a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
If your Wii is fully up-to-date (running System Software 4.3), you can easily set up Riivolution and play Newer using Letterbomb. If that all sounds foreign to you, load up Google and do a search for a basic run down on directions. If you're running System Software 4.2 or earlier, the mod team has provided an easy to understand Installation Guide for your benefit.
The crew released a short trailer showing off their work, which you can check out below.
