Considered as one the best games of the last console generation, 2010's Red Dead Redemption is a masterpiece. And as early as then, gamers have been clamoring for a sequel for Red Dead Redemtion. It is a testament to its epic and revolutionary concepts. Now 6 years later, a sequel has been confirmed by Rockstar, Red Dead Redemption's developer, and fans are once again fired up for the series.
This long development process for Rockstar is nothing new for gamers. The developer tends to spend a long time producing their games, sometimes spanning half decade intervals between their main franchises. For example, Grand Theft Auto 4 was released in 2008 while its sequel was released in 2013 which means that the sequel was in development for about 5 years. Likewise, Red Dead Redemption 2 is probably in developed for a long time similar to the Grand Theft Auto Series.
In fact, a Reddit post shows an image of Joe Cavers, an active sound designer in the gaming industry, who has posted his portfolio online. Based on his portfolio, the sound designer has been working on Red Dead Redemption since at least 2014. We can then surmise that Red Dead Redemption has been in development for at least 3 years.
We can also assume that the sound designer started working on Red Dead Redemption 2 on the back end of its development process. Developing a game requires a multitude of process beginning on the conceptualization to programing. Sound design usually comes at last part of the process since a general idea of the gameplay is needed in order for the music to fit the game.
Most recently, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, publisher of Red Dead Redemption 2 gave his insights on the sequel. The CEO tells that now is the perfect time to release Red Dead Redemption 2 telling that the time is right for a "big, sprawling, optimistic view of America" which he thinks is not "meant to be cute." He also teases that Red Dead Redepmtion 2 has "great emotional depth" and expects the game to offer great story and gameplay elements.
Will we see Red Dead Redemption 2 follow in the footsteps of other games that provide emotional depth such The Last Us. We can only wait until Red Dead Redemption 2 releases on Fall 2017 on Playstation 4 and Xbox One to find out. Let's hope that Rockstar's method pays off as It is expected to sell as many as 12 million copies. Stay tuned for more updates.
