Green Day rendered a stellar performance at the 2016 American Music Awards. Lead vocalist Billy Joe Armstrong changed the lyrics of their latest single entitled "Bang Bang" to express his disgust against the controversial President-elect Donald Trump.
In the chorus, Green Day sang, "No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist U.S.A." This is the second political statement by the band for this month. In November 6, at the MTV Europe Music Awards, the rock band modified the lyrics of their song "American Idiot." The original line that says, "the subliminal mind f- -k America" was changed to "the subliminal mind Trump America."
Armstrong, the band's frontman has been so vocal about his strong opinions toward Trump. In an interview, Breitbart reported that he compared Trump to Hitler. He was quoted saying that the worst problem he saw about Trump is his followers. He added that he actually felt bad for the supporters as they are poor, working class who cannot get a leg up. He said that the supporters are just angry and that Trump has used it to prey on that anger.
In his Instagram post, the Green Day lead vocalist aired out his sentiments on the recently concluded elections. He said that misogyny, racism, transphobia, homophobia and xenophobia have no place on any Green Day event. He ended saying that the band will stand by these marginalized sectors with rage, love and unity and that he is looking forward to that day when they stand together and punch back even harder.
The 2016 American Music Awards was the first show after the elections, where artists have been loud on their opinion against Donald Trump. Aside from Greenday, artists like Gigi Hadid and co-host Jay Pharaoh, award presenters Idina Menzel and Mark Cuban also took shots at the Trumps.
