Game designer Drew Rechner has finally completed the seven year project of Baldur's Gate: Reloaded, a fan-made mod for Neverwinter Nights 2 that recreates the original 1998 Bioware RPG and expansion Tales of Sword Coast in full 3D.
Rechner said that a majority of the work on Baldur's Gate: Reloaded was done by him along with programmers Shallina, Greg Scheider, Andy Kasten and Sebastien Raymond. An early build even helped him get a job at Section 8 developer TimeGate Studios before it shut down according to Kotaku. Development on Baldur's Gate: Reloaded started in 2006 and has no affiliation with Bioware.
"Ridiculous amounts of hours, sweat, and tears were poured into this thing and now it's finally released to the public," said Rechner on his Facebook account.
Outside of requiring a copy of Neverwinter Nights and its Storm of Zehir expansion(both are $20 on GOG), the mod is free through Nexus Mods.
The last couple of months have been pretty good to fans of the Baldur's Gate fans. Beamdog through Overhaul Games mentioned future releases of new content for its own remake through last year's Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. The remake added over 400 improvements to the original. Last month, the developer told Shack News that new content was on the way alongside a revamp of Baldur's Gate 2.
"We're hard at work on BG2:EE and it is going well," said Beamdog president Trent Oster. "Phil(our design lead) mentioned to me there is over 350,000 words of new content," the developer said.
According to Oster, those words were related to quests and story across Shadow of Amn and expansion Throne of Bhaal.
Published by Atari, Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition is available for PC, iOS and OS X.
