Xbox One, PS4 clock speeds don’t measure console performance properly: Avalanche Studios

While we are yet to test out the real power that’s hidden within the upcoming Xbox One and PS4, most of the comparisons between the consoles, of late, have involved the consoles’ RAM and processor speed. And although we are waiting to see how these factors influence the next generation of gaming, some industry giants have already stated their views on the subject.

Linus Blomberg, Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Avalanche Studios, in a recent interview with Gamingbolt, discussed about the prospects of console-based clock speeds affecting games in the next generation, and with the clock speeds of both the consoles unknown, if they will face the same beating that Nintendo faced with its Wii U.

“Clock speed isn’t really a very good measurement of performance. Modern processors are capable of processing much more data than last-gen processors, even at lower clock-speeds. Lower clock-speeds also have the benefit of consuming less power and producing less heat, meaning that that hardware can be more silent,” Blomberg stated.

“What matters the most is the number of processors available, and luckily the PS3 forced developers to become much better at utilizing parallel processing power.”

On asked whether the titles on the PlayStation 4, said to allocate 7 GB GDDR5 RAM as compared to Xbox One’s 8 GB DDR3 RAM, will look and run better compared to rival company Microsoft’s console, Blomber said: “I think that is too early to say. Naturally it’s easier and cheaper for the developers to develop for the smallest common denominator, but if that difference becomes too large we’ll definitely see specific implementations for each platform.”

Both Xbox One and PlayStation, which are said to allocate only 5GB to the games that will run on them, are expected to be made available to the fans by the end of 2013. More information on the consoles is also expected to arrive at the upcoming E3.

Only recently we chalked out a detailed comparison between the Xbox One and PS4, and judging by the initial specs of both consoles from Sony and Microsoft, it was found out that both of them are extremely similar, with an expectation that the games that will arrive on these consoles will look the same, more or less.
