Square Enix is making Deus Ex: The Fall a mobile game only

After all the Twitter teases from developer Eidos Montreal, a clearer picture is finally beginning to emerge from Square Enix, who formally announced Deus Ex: The Fall earlier today.

Rather than a continuation of the last Deus Ex game, Human Revolution, The Fall actually takes place after the events of the book "The Icarus Project," which served as a prequel of sorts, intertwined with characters and events from Human Revolution. Players take on the role of the book's protagonist Ben Saxon, former SAS and Belltower employee who underwent heavy augmentation and joined the Tyrants, a paramilitary group made up of augmented mercenaries who served as the primary antagonists in Human Revolution. In the book, Saxon is predictably betrayed by them.

Sounds good, right? Well, it might not be what you thought, because The Fall won't be coming to any current or next-gen PlayStations or Xboxes, or any console for that matter. Described as an action RPG, The Fall is the series mobile debut, and will only be arriving on tablets and other mobile devices. iPad and iPhones have been specifically mentioned, but no word on other devices just yet. Futuristic game for futuristic devices I suppose...

Like Telltale's The Walking Dead, Deus Ex: The Fall will be released in installments, the first of which should be arriving later this summer for $6.99.

I've never been much for mobile gaming, but I've loved the Deus Ex brand since the first game hit the PC back in 2000, mostly for the game's storyline, the way it managed to intertwine so many famous conspiracy theories and groups, and the countless ways you could interact with NPC's and complete various tasks. Invisible War was a bit of a disappointment with the universal ammo, but the story was still there, and I quite enjoyed Human Revolution as well. I don't usually go for mobile games, but I'll have to give this one a try.

Based on the announcement video, the touch screen controls don't look too shabby, and some new augmentations join old favorites. While it isn't shown, I wouldn't be surprised if much of the game will have the same features as the Director's Cut of Human Revolution for the Wii U. You can get a sneak peek at the game and how the touch screen controls work in the official announcement video below.
