Harmonix teams with Disney for Fantasia: Music Evolved

Guitar Hero and Rock Band creator Harmonix will be developing a project for Disney with Fantasia: Music Evolved.

An exclusive game for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Fantasia: Music Evolved involves usage of Kinect to manipulate the flow of music through motion control. Features include the ability to change song mixes in real-time, adding layers through "magic manipulators," or mashing the original track with remixed versions.

Original and remixed music for the rhythm game will come from some of music's "leading" artists ranging from Fun. and Bruno Mars to Queen.

Competitive or collaborative multiplayer will be supported through a two-player offline only.

Fantasia: Music Evolved will have a modern vibe inspired by Disney's 1940 animated film classic Fantasia that consisted of eight animated shorts set to classical music pieces performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra and conducted by Leopold Stokowski. A sequel, Fantasia 2000, would be released in 1999 and would feature the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with conductor James Levine. Both films were popular for The Sorcerer's Apprentice segments in which Mickey Mouse plays the role of apprentice.

Disney Interactive will be publishing Fantasia: Music Evolved along with the upcoming Disney Infinity when it is released next year.

The last game Harmonix released was Dance Central 3 for Xbox360. In an exclusive interview with Venture Beat, Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopulos said the developer would love to make another Dance Central or Rock Band eventually.

"I'll also say that we don't view Rock Band as something that's being left behind," Rigopulos said. "It's something we'll return to at the right point in time and reimagine it as appropriate for its time."

Disney Interactive is expecting to have an interesting E3 showing with Disney Infinite and Disney Planes. Disney Infinite will be the company's attempt to put a dent in Activision's extremely popular Skylander's franchise while Disney Planes is based on the upcoming Cars spin-off set for theatrical release Aug. 9.
