HBO's "Game of Thrones" is entering the final stretch of its run with Season 8 confirmed to be the last of the hit series. With season 7 airing next year, fans are already speculating whether the network is already thinking about a "Game of Thrones" prequel once the show wraps up. Here are all the details about a possible "Game of Thrones" prequel:
HBO is already thinking about it
While most skeptics would point out that HBO rarely dabbles on sequels when they finish their hit TV series. There is already a credible source that says that there are already discussions among HBO higher ups about a possible "Game of Thrones" prequel spinoff. According to Australia Network News, the source is none other that HBO programming president Casey Bloys.
This is what she had to say about the whole "Game of Thrones" prequel, "We've talked very, very kind of high-level, like, 'Oh, that would be interesting, a prequel would be interesting, are there areas that make more sense? But we haven't - no one has put pen to paper - yet. It's still pretty early on." While this is not an official announcement from the network, it is still a pretty good indicator that the proposed "Game of Thrones" prequel has a good chance to be in production.
It could be about Robert's rebellion
One good idea for the spin-off was reported by the site, Forbes. The premise of the new "Game of Thrones" prequel could be about Robert Baratheon's rebellion. The events of this arc were the starting point for the "Game of Thrones" series and are already mentioned a lot of times throughout the seven seasons. Fans are already familiar with the plot as well as a good chance for them to be reacquainted with a young Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark.
And of course, the mad king would also be prominent and is a good benchmark to create a compelling villain for a "Game of Thrones" prequel. The "Game of Thrones" prequel is yet to have a release date, however, season 7 will air on mid-2017.
