It's been 13 years since the original Deus Ex was released. The FPS/RPG has proved massively popular over the years. It has spawned two sequels and modders have been hard at work building additional content for the title. Modder FastGamerr has just released a total conversion for the original Deus Ex game. Deus Ex: Nihilum adds up to 13 hours of new gameplay, over two hours of music and more than three hours of original dialogue to the classic title.
Nihilum takes place in alternative-reality to Deus Ex. Set in 2049, the game follows the journey of UNATCO agent Mad Ingram as he investigates terrorists activity in Hong Kong. FastGamerr says the mod was created to be a sort-of expansion pack to the original title. He reports that his mod works as a spiritual expansion for the original Deus Ex.
According to DSOGaming, FastGamerr worked on the mod for over ten years. He used material from the UNATCO Born mod and Deus Ex: Revision mod to create Nihilum. FastGamerr says that he received permissions from the creators of those mods before starting work on the title.
"I did not expect to be working on [Nihilum] for this long. Yet, while it may have taken a lot more time than I originally estimated - and also cementing the fact that I'm never going to undertake a project like this ever again - in long run it was all worth it," FastGamerr wrote about his work on the project.
The Deus Ex franchise has seen a resurgence in recent years. A sequel to the original was released in 2003. While the title was generally appreciated by critics, it failed to live up to its predecessor.
After the launch of Deus Ex: Invisible War, the Deus Ex franchise failed to release another game in the series for nearly eight years. In 2011, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was released by Ubisoft. Human Revolution was set 25 years prior to the story of the original game and followed a new main character named Adam Jensen. The game proved successful enough for Ubisoft to start work on a director's cut of the title for the Wii U. The Wii U exclusive is set to be released later this year.
