Infinity Ward has explained as to why the company felt it important to shift its workforce from the highly praised Modern Warfare series to something entirely new.
As reported, initially Infinity Ward considered working on something completely new after Modern Warfare 3 before deciding to stick with the series. However, as executive producer Mark Rubin explained, the decision to shift to a new game with a new engine, characters and a new world wasn't a very swift one.
"Not a hard decision, but a long decision," Rubin said in an interview with MCV. "We don’t get a chance when making a game to think about the next one until we are done actually making that first game.”
"So when we finished Modern Warfare 3, we had this big brainstorming session that lasted for weeks. Everybody gets to come up with ideas of what we want to do, not just what game we want to do, but moments in games.
He went on to state that the company was only focussed on making a Call of Duty game. And although there was always the option of doing something else, the idea of a new Call of Duty game never escaped anybody’s mind with new characters, a new world and a fresh storyline.
"The easy thing would have been – as we had finished the arc of Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3 – to start a new arc within that same universe. That was the first step. But due to a lot of the changes we wanted to make with this new world, it really dictated out that we needed to make something that wasn’t Modern Warfare," he stated.
