Sonic: Lost World Debuted, First Gameplay Details Revealed [TRAILER]

It would be an understatement to say Sonic has had an image problem for the past several years. Whether it's his bevy of ridiculous, ever-mulitplying cartoon friends or the needless mechanics shoved into each implausible sequel, the blue blur has all but faded from sight. The one thing fans of the hedgehog have been requesting all along might be the only thing that could save the franchise, and Sega is apparently looking to capitalize on this.

Sonic Lost World was first unveiled during the Nintendo Direct in May, after Nintendo announced an exclusive partnership that would bring Sonic the Hedgehog exclusively to Nintendo platforms.

After watching the trailer, many gamers have drawn inevitable comparisons to Super Mario Galaxy, which might not be a bad thing considering Galaxy was one of the stand-out first-party titles on the Wii.

IGN also sat down for a hands-off preview of Lost World and an interview with Takashi Iizuka, a producer for the game. "In previous 3D Sonic games, even if you're running through a level at top speed, if you hit an obstacle you stop instantly. To avoid this, we added a new action to keep Sonic running, even when you hit an obstacle. To make sure it only happens when you want it to, it's triggered by the player holding the run button," Iizuka says.

The preview also discusses some of the Wii U and 3DS-centric features of Sonic: Lost World. On the Wii U, two players can cooperate in "Support Mode," which "allows one player to use Wii U's tablet to assist a second player who is controlling Sonic with a Wii remote and Nunchuck. For the 3DS, Sega has confirmed that the portable edition will feature full 3D levels as well. GoNintendo has compiled a convenient list in case the rest of the preview is TL;DR.
