In 2011, HBO’s "Game of Thrones" took the television world by storm with its very first episode, and it has continuously slayed ratings since then. In the same year, A Dance with Dragons – the fifth book in George R.R. Martin’s critically acclaimed fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire – was published. It has been five years since then, and fans of both the TV and book series have been struck by double blows, with producers David Benioff & D.B. Weiss announcing the TV series would conclude in eight seasons while author Martin remains mum on a publication date for Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the series.
Thankfully, fans may have something to look forward to beyond 2018, which is when the last season of "Game of Thrones" is set to end. Recent news reports that talks are ongoing between George R.R. Martin and HBO about a possible spinoff.
One of the most frequently asked questions about the follow-up to the award-winning series is whether the "Game of Thrones" spinoff would have anything to do with Robert’s rebellion. Robert Baratheon, one of the major characters in Season 1, occupied the Iron Throne following the murder of the previous king. Mark Addy was the face of the role in the TV series.
According to reports, the people behind HBO are still exploring areas on what to tackle for the follow-up. Ideas that have come up during talks include a possible "Game of Thrones" sequel that could explain how Westeros has originated. Another possibility is for the series to focus on the period prior to the rule of Targaryens, the family that produced fan-favorite Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons, and played by Emilia Clarke.
Since its creation, "Game of Thrones" has gone on to win numerous awards, including 38 Emmys, a Peabody Award, and 5 from the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
