A sequel for "Don't Breathe", inarguably one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year, makes sense. The movie reeled in approximately $150 million worldwide and caught the attention of critics and pundits. Sony, without surprise, is looking to make a second movie.
The deliberately open-ended conclusion of the movie allows for a sequel. The first movie followed a trio of young delinquents who break inside the home of an elderly blind man. Unbeknownst to them, the old man is more than capable of wiping them out, owing to a tragic past and his vet experience in the army. "Don't Breathe" starred Jane Levy ("Evil Dead"), Daniel Zovatto ("It Follows"), Dylan Minnette ("Goosebumps"), and Stephen Lang ("Avatar").
Alvarez has a busy couple of years ahead of him what with the recent announcement of his involvement as director of the upcoming film adaptation of David Lagercrantz's "The Girl in the Spider's Web". At first understandably reluctant about the idea, Alvarez finally agreed to do the movie after coming up what he says is the "greatest idea" for the sequel.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, he said:
"Right now, yeah, Don't Breathe 2 is something we definitely want to do. The challenge is obvious - we just don't want to do the same movie again, slap a "2" on it. We'll feel so embarrassed if we do that. Our first reaction when they told us, 'Do you want to do it?' was like, 'No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. That's Hollywood! That's the devil! We don't want to make a sequel just because we can.' But then we got an idea that we're really excited about, and I won't tell you what it is because it will spoil the whole thing."
Sam Raimi, director of horror cult classics "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead II", expressed his support for the young director, saying: "It's only the greatest idea for a sequel that I've ever heard! I'm not kidding!"
"Don't Breathe 2" is currently in the early stages of development and thusly has no official release date yet, but you can bet on us spilling the details as they come.
