GameStop doesn't seem the least bit worried about the possible fate of used next-generation games according to a recent article with Forbes.
GameStop president Tony Bartel tell the publication it plans on benefiting from used game sales.
"Both Sony and Microsoft have said games can be resold and that's exactly what we anticipated," Bartel said. "It's a recognized way to make these games more affordable. All three new platforms understand that."
According to Bartel, 70 percent of the $1 billion that GameStop brings to the market goes to new games sales. Bartel said that there's no longer a need for backwards compatibility in consoles by using the transition between the Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 as an example.
"As people upgraded to PS3 they traded in their old systems and libraries which is why Sony made the move to not support backwards compatibility with later iterations of PS3," Bartel explained. "That's why the 'buy,sell,trade' model works well. It enables people to purchase new games by trading in their old ones."
The process of reselling used PS4 and Xbox One games seems to be a ball of confusion, especially when it comes to Microsoft's console. Microsoft told Wired that the Xbox One would require users to pay a fee in transferring games over to a second party. A spokesperson for the company would later speak with Polygon and confirm that the Xbox One can play used games though actual details weren't available.
Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Phil Harrison confirmed that the actual price of the game would be required if a player wanted to use it on their friends account. Further details came from the company's Director of Xbox Live Programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb in a conversation with Kotaku.
"While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail," said Hryb.
Microsoft is expect to give more information on its Xbox One console next month at E3.
