Conor McGregor established himself as the UFC’s best of the best, knocking out Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to become the only fighter to hold two belts from two different weight classes. It was his goal from the start and now that he has achieved that, it remains to be seen what he will do next.
There are two fighters who McGregor could face – Nate Diaz or Jose Aldo. Of the two, the former seems more logical since Aldo is reportedly contemplating on retirement. Diaz could get a shot at the UFC lightweight title while Aldo, if he continues to fight on, could eye payback and take back the featherweight plum.
Aldo is set to meet with the UFC bosses in Las Vegas to discuss his contract and possible plans for retirement, MMA Fighting reported. According to Aldo, he planned to retire after the UFC 194 loss to Conor McGregor but was prevailed upon to fight on.
"I’m waiting. That’s the situation now," Aldo said. "We have a meeting scheduled to solve everything, but everything has been said already. We will see what happens in this meeting. I can talk more when I return."
As for Diaz, he still holds the distinction of handing McGregor his first-ever UFC loss. With the lightweight belt in the balance, that should be more than enough reason for him to get another match, a decider on who is truly the best between him and the Irishman, Maxim.com reported.
For Diaz, money is more important than the title and a match with McGregor still reels that in. Nothing may develop for now as “The Notorious” savors his triumph. The situation may change in May where talks could swirl for a McGregor vs. Diaz III.
