The Sega Mega Drive launched 26 years ago, but it will soon feature a new game, titled "Tanglewood." The game is a new platformer for the Sega Mega Drive, which will be completely written in assembly language.
Kotaku stated that "Tanglewood" is developed by Matt Philips, a developer based in Sheffield. The game will have players take on the role of Nymn, a fox-like being who was isolated from his companions in a very dangerous forest.
Nymn will have to find his friends before falling prey to the dangers that lurk in Tanglewood. The game is special because the classic Sega Mega Drive development kit was used to create and test it. "Tanglewood" will also be playable on PC for players who do not own a Sega Mega Drive.
"Tanglewood" Compatible Consoles & Gaming Clones
"Tanglewood" will be playable on the Sega Mega Drive I, II and compatible clones, Sega Genesis I, II, III, and compatible clones, Windows, Mac and Linux. The PC game will be available as a downloadable app, with the graphics looking very much the same as the Sega Mega Drive version.
All reward tiers will also feature a copy of the PC version. The ROM will be compatible with most major emulators, although players are recommended to play on a real console via a flash cart like Everdrive. The prototype of "Tanglewood" will include three acts from the first level.
"Tanglewood" Gameplay Inspired By "The Lion King," "Sonic the Hedgehog"
According to the developer, "Tanglewood" is a platformer with puzzle elements, inspired by other Sega Mega Drive titles like "The Lion King," "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Flashback," as well as newer titles. The gameplay will differ between levels, and there will be plenty of collectible items, rewards and characters to discover.
There will also be several enemies to encounter in "Tanglewood" when darkness falls. The game is set in a distant planet, featuring deep forests and spotted lakes.
The "Tanglewood" Kickstarter page stated that the game is set to release in physical cartridge form in winter 2017. The world of Tanglewood becomes especially dangerous after dark, so Nymn will have to use traps, evasion skills and trickery to overcome predators and survive until morning. More updates and details on "Tanglewood" are expected soon.
