"Game of Thrones" is expected to finish off after its eighth season and there have been discussions of possible spinoffs as well as a prequel series. Casey Bloys, the HBO executive has commented on the reported prequel project as to what could be its standing once the series ends.
"I would say it's still kind of preliminary, ongoing talks. There are areas we are exploring but I wouldn't point to any one and say, 'This is what we're going to do,'" said Bloys in an interview with Entertainment Weekly when asked if they already have a specific concept in their discussions with author George R.R. Martin.
Asked whether the final couple episodes of "Game of Thrones" will be shown in cinemas as a movie, Bloys replied, "I want everything I can get for HBO, let me put it that way."
"Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss also revealed back in September that most likely, they won't be part of the possible prequel series. However, they expect that the franchise should continue as part of the talks between HBO and George R.R. Martin.
In July, both showrunners Benioff and D.B. Weiss also made clear that "Game of Thrones" is 'so rich and deep that there are countless storytelling opportunities", according to GameSpot. Both showrunners agree that George R.R. Martin has a built a world of tremendous characters that there's "a lot of different ways you could go with it". Benioff and Weiss said that they haven't had time to consider a "Game of Thrones" prequel because they're focused on season seven.
"Game of Thrones" season seven will debut during the summer of 2017 and will only have seven episodes which is shorter compared to its previous seasons..
