When "Game of Thrones" season 7 returns this 2017, it will be its penultimate chapter, and fans are already anticipating what's next for the George R.R. Martin characters. The latest news surrounding the HBO series is that there's a possibility that the finale will get a theatrical release and that a prequel is still being discussed.
According to Entertainment Weekly, a "Game of Thrones" season 7 prequel still being discussed at HBO. This comes straight from HBO programming president Casey Bloys, who admits that they're still discussing with Martin the possibilities of the "Game of Thrones" franchise's future. Is a finale theatrical release in sight, though?
Bloys called it "preliminary ongoing talks," but for "Game of Thrones" season 7 fans, that's more than enough to keep them hopeful. According to Bloys, they have a ton of ideas being discussed at the moment, and there's no one idea that they want to roll with just yet. Bloys also kept mum on how many episodes "Game of Thrones" season 7 will be, but he admitted that he would "take as much as we can get." Fans are hoping as well that a finale theatrical release would be in sight for the epic series.
While fans and even Martin are rooting for the finale getting a theatrical release while the prequel still being discussed at HBO, Bloys said that the series finale will most likely stay on the network. Meanwhile, Gamespot reports that in the event of a prequel, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will most likely not be part of it.
"Game of Thrones" season 7 showrunners did admit, however, that there are "countless storytelling opportunities" moving forward with the franchise. Here's to hoping that something meaningful would come out of the prequel currently being discussed at HBO. Keep checking back for the latest on "Game of Thrones" season 7, returning to HBO in summer 2017.
