Payday 2 will forgo a digital release on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this summer, and will instead launch as a full retail release, developer Overkill Software and 505 Games say. The game, which is also launching on PC via Steam, was apparently too large, with too many different features, to be constrained by the limitations of a digital platform release. The game was previously confirmed as digital only.
"We have a bit of a problem here at Overkill - there are just too many great ideas and none that we were really happy to throw out - so PAYDAY 2 has become just too big to reserve release on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network alone," says David Goldfarb, Game Director of Payday 2, in a statement.
Payday 2 is the sequel to Payday: the Heist, released in 2011. In Payday 2, players team up to perform bank heists and robberies using new abilities that weren't available in the first game. The game supports co-op of up to four players.
"It's an incredible position to be in, having a game that just keeps growing and getting better all the time," adds Tim Woodley, Head of Global Brand at 505 Games, Tim Woodley. "We wanted to do everything we could to make a game that truly fits the vision of the team at Overkill but most importantly delivers an exciting, rewarding experience for the player - be they a long-time fan or new to the series. We're expecting great things from PAYDAY 2 and are really looking forward to working with our retail partners all over the world to make it the huge success it deserves to be."
While the retail release of Payday 2 means more (and hopefully better) content for players on Xbox 360, PC and PS3, it also means a higher price point. Let's hope that extra content is really worth it.
