Mobile company manufacturer Samsung announced a new Galaxy Beta Programme so that Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge users can have a nibble on Nougat before its full rollout.
On a first come, first served basis, the programme is available to users of a SIM-free S7 and allows people to test-drive Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung's custom UI on top. The trial period was initially prepared to allow the access to refine the update ahead of the public release, as noted in some reports.
"Throughout the Galaxy Beta Programme period, users can get a feel for Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung's latest UX, and can provide feedback on performance, reliability and usability," Samsung said in a blog post.
Owners of the S7 or S7 edge can apply to join through the Galaxy Beta Program app, available on Galaxy Apps. Alternatively users can sign up through the Samsung Members app, which is available on the Google Play Store, or Galaxy Apps, depending on which country you are signing up from.
Now words yet from the tech company about when the update will be rolled out to all S7 and S7 Edge customers. The OS is currently available on the new Google Pixel and Pixel XL phones, as well as the LG V20.
Nougat 7.0 promises to bring improved battery life, credis to changes to the Doze Mode feature, which now starts up as soon as the screen switches off. A more robust security is also available, as each file is individually encrypted instead of the whole phone as one, and a check on background apps will prevent you unknowingly burning through monthly data allowances. The Galaxy Beta Programme is available now for users in the UK, US and Korea, and a launch in China will kick off shortly.
ITPro reported that earlier this week it was revealed that Nougat has been installed on just 0.3 per cent of active Android smartphones and tablets. Currently, the device makers are keeping quiet on when customers can expect the update to arrive.
