War Thunder, Gaijin Entertainment's popular free-to-play PC MMO will make its way to Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 this holiday season, the developer says. This marks the franchise's console debut, after being available on PC since November 2012.
War Thunder throws players into the World War II era as they take part in major conflicts and battles using ground forces and armored vehicles, planes and warships. The game's first-person perspective features player-vs-player battles that take place against players all over the world, while player-vs-environment options are also available. Those include single player campaigns, a mission editor and more.
"We're convinced that our cooperation with Sony will not only make the War Thunder franchise better, but it will give our fans a new level of gaming experience that will figuratively blown their mind," says Gaijin Entertainment's Creative Director Kirill Yudintsev in a company release. "Partnering with Sony Computer Entertainment is the most natural progression for the War Thunder brand, from our hugely successful beginnings on PC with more than 1.5 million players, to our recent announcement that War Thunder is under development for mobile devices."
Asked if the game will retain it's free-to-play nature a spokesman declined comment.
War Thunder on PS4 will be a unique experience when compared to the mobile and PC versions of the game. Gaijin wants to offer players a new control scheme thanks to the Dual Shock 4 controller. An improved head-tracking system, socialization tools, and even options for gameplay recording and streaming are also in the works. Finally, the game will feature full support for PlayStation Cloud for saving data.
Gaijin Entertainment has released a teaser trailer for War Thunder, featuring a brief (but beautiful) look at the game's ground forces. There's no official release date for War Thunder on PS4 at this time, but Gaijin confirms the game will be available in time for the holiday season. For now, players can check out the PC version of the game, which remains in open beta.
