Sonic the Hedgehog was released on the Sega Genesis in 1991, triggering a slew of not so good sequels and ports. There's perhaps no other video game character as locked in to a love-hate relationship with gamers as the spinning blue hedgehog himself, but even with the franchise's missteps over time, the original Genesis game still has the power to strip away tons of free time.
Now, a 3D version of the classic game is set to launch on Nintendo's 3DS eShop, but only for players in Japan. Tiny Cartridge has translated the game's information. The 3D version of the game is an enhanced port, offering more than a simple copy and paste experience from the original Genesis game.
For one, Spin Dashing can be turned on or off. In addition, the buttons and controls can be remapped to suit a player's play style. Normal and CRT modes are available, as well as the ability to switch between the Japanese and Western versions of the game which would allow you to see the differences between the two.
Adding even more customization options to the game, players can choose to emulate the game's original Sega Genesis audio, and of course, can customize how little or how much of a 3D effect they see while playing using the handheld's slider. Depending on the combination of options, the game could be tweaked to look, sound and feel a lot like the original Sega Genesis game, even while playing on such a modern device.
This 3D release of Sonic the Hedgehog will launch on Nintendo 3DS eShop this week. There's no word yet on whether or not the game will be released for western audiences.
