SEGA is planning to feature an all-new character in the next Sonic the Hedgehog game, currently codenamed "Project Sonic 2017." News of "Project Sonic 2017" arrives as the company celebrates the 25th anniversary of the speedy blue hedgehog.
Twinfinite stated that SEGA held a special event for Sonic the Hedgehog's 25 years in the business at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2016. The company also featured a trailer of the upcoming "Sonic Project 2017," which had a number of familiar features from previous titles.
The "Project Sonic 2017" video showcased both classic and modern Sonic, although Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, confirmed that the new game was a standalone title, and not a sequel. There will also be a number of new features added, aside from the trailer revelations.
A livestream event was recently held in Japan to launch "Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice," with Iizuka present to answer questions. He was also asked about "Project Sonic 2017," where he revealed that the upcoming title will introduce a wholly new character to fans.
Based on the video, "Project Sonic 2017" may bring a brand new hedgehog. In the teaser, Sonic was initially on his way to battle a new unknown threat. Another hedgehog, who appeared like the blue blur, ran alongside him, hinting that Sonic will be getting some help from his new companion in Project Sonic 2017."
Engadget reported that aside from "Project Sonic 2017," a Sonic movie is reportedly in its early stages. Director Tim Miller was recently hired to executive produce the film, with Jeff Fowler to serve as director.
The live-action and animation hybrid film was first announced in February 2016. Miller will be joining Fowler and Neal H. Moritiz to executive produce the film. Both Miller and Fowler are involved in Blur Studios and have worked behind various CG advertisements for titles like "Halo: The Master Chief Collection," "Doom," "Mafia III," and "Titanfall 2," among others.
The new "Project Sonic 2017" character may be identified in the coming months, although the game will not launch until Christmas 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. More updates and details on Project Sonic 2017" are expected soon.
