Unity Awards Nominations Open: May The War Begin

Famed game engine provider Unity announced today that nominations for its sixth annual Unity Awards are now open.

According to the San Francisco-based developer's site, the awards are held "in order to recognize the most impressive games and other projects" created with the Unity engine.

"When we began creating Unity so many many years ago, we had high hopes, but seeing the continuous and shockingly rapid improvement of the interactive games and experiences made with Unity is mind-blowing," said Unity CEO David Helgason in a press release. "These individuals and organizations are what drive the technology forward and help us strive to make our technology more powerful and more complete."

Nine awards will be up for grabs including Best Gameplay, Best Non-game Project, Best Student Project, Technical Achievement and the best overall Golden Cube. Last year's winners include Madfinger's "Dead Trigger" and Simogo's "Beat Sneak Bandit" along with Creative Assembly's "Total War Battles" taking home the Golden Cube. Each of the nominations and winners will be chosen by the Unity Technologies team minus the Community Choice award, which will be voted on by the Unity community starting July.

The award ceremony will take place Aug. 29 at the Vancouver Convention Center and nominations will be accepted through June 30.

Coinciding with the Unity Awards will be the developer's seventh annual Unite 2013 developer conference starting Aug. 28-30 at the Vancouver Convention Center. Unite 2013 will offer three days of advanced class and tutorials technical sessions dedicated to the Unity engine. Unity Technology will also host a Unity Training Day the day before Unite 2013 to give a full day of hands-on training for new and inexperienced users of Unity.

Founded in 2004, Unity Technologies have been the engine behind Imangi Studios' "Temple Run" and Rovio Entertainment's "Bad Piggies." The Unity engine has served a developer community of 1.8 million including large publishers, indie studios and students across both console and mobile platforms. Outside of gaming, the Unity engine has been used for training simulations, medical and architectural visualizations.
